You are more than the athlete, professional, or the role you've been assigned. Your story doesn't end with a single label. By transcending the identities that have defined you, you discover the boundless possibilities of who you can become. This isn't just about finding new paths - it's about realizing that your worth and potential are limitless, no matter where life's journey takes you.
Life rarely follows a straight line, and success isn't confined to a single plan. When we cling too tightly to Plan A, we risk missing the opportunities that lie in Plan B through Z. By breaking free from the limits of a single path, you give yourself permission to adapt, evolve and uncover new strengths. This isn't about having a backup plan - it's about realizing that every step, every pivot and every detour is a chacne to become more than you ever imagined.
A strong mental foundation is essential for weathering life's inevitable storms. Cultivating mental and emotional resilience means equipping yourself with the tools to handle stress, adapt to uncertainty and bounce back from setbacks. By priortizing your mental health and developing resilience, you create a robust inner strength that helps you stay grounded and focused, even when life throws you off course. This inner strength is the key to embracing change and thriving no matter what challenges arise.
Engaging. Humorous. Thought Provoking. Having watched and listened to Erin many times, the presentation at Rockhurst University was her best! With Erin’s wide array of life experiences, she quickly connects to her audience and brings them along for a meaningful experience that will linger long after leaving the auditorium. She is all over the stage with vitality as she interacts with her listeners for a fully synergistic presentation. We hope to hear her again when she is on her next speaking tour.

"This past Tuesday (October 11, 2022) Mrs. Baer came to Rockhurst University to speak to the student athletes about mental health and her experiences as a student athlete and beyond. I really loved the way that she introduced her life story and experiences with golf as an escape she had used from a young age. As someone who also was frequently bullied throughout elementary school and used extracurriculars as a way to be separate from that I was able to connect with her on a personal level. I loved how she used multiple physical props to make the presentation engaging and dynamic. This allowed those of us in the audience to see exactly what she was talking about rather than feeling the need to create a mental image.
She also told multiple stories about her experience after injuring her wrist and how she learned that using the resources around her was not a sign of weakness but instead a sign of strength.
She further explained how she was able to remain an active member of the golf team despite her injury preventing her from playing her freshman season. This is something that I know so many athletes struggle with and this example of perseverance and support was beneficial to hear from someone that was able to come out on the other side.
I enjoyed that Mrs. Baer did not shy away from sharing personal aspects of her experiences which allowed me to further find aspects of the presentation that I could connect to. Coming away from the presentation I took some time to reflect on everything that she shared and decided to make my first appointment with the Counseling Center here on campus because as she said during the presentation it was not a sign of weakness but instead a sign of strength."

On the morning of May 1st 2024, some colleagues were chatting about a talk they were going to attend later on, so I decided to look into it a little more. It was a talk done by Erin Baer entitled, “You are more than your sport”. I’m a sports guy so initially I was intrigued to attend, and was really excited when it was in regards to golf, one of my favorite sports to play. I was also interested in attending because I have 2 daughters who have been heavily involved in sports throughout their adolescence, and was hoping to get some good takeaways from the talk. Little did I know, I would be getting some takeaways for myself as well.
As Erin took us through her story of how she got involved in the sport of golf, you could really envision how it all panned out. When she got to the point of needing to see a therapist in regards to her mental health, it lit a tiny fire in me to go ahead and look into getting some counseling for myself – since my mental health hasn’t been the best lately. One of the stats she shared was pretty astonishing – about 50% of people seek help with their mental health issues. Myself as well as everyone in the room was pretty shocked by this since everyone was guessing anywhere from 2% to 20%. With all the mental health issues going on in today’s world, it really is an important factor to talk with our kids about. I was able to share Erin’s book with my daughters so they could get an idea of what I was able to experience in the talk that day. The great thing about Erin’s talk is that it doesn’t matter if you play sports or not, but that you really do need to reflect on yourself and instill some positive affirmations that you are good enough as who you are and you don’t need to change who you are for anyone in this world because you are enough.
This also reminded of the talk when Erin asked us all to introduce ourselves to the person next to us as, “Hi, my name is ___ and I want to be a ____ when I grow up”. That’s all we could say, nothing more. She was asking how we felt about that, and when she called on me, I responded that it was weird. As individuals, for some reason we want to explain the why portion of something, and in this instance, it wasn’t necessary because that was enough.
I found this whole experience to be very humbling, and made me think of a lot of different things as to help myself and my family be better for each other. Erin is an amazing speaker, and anyone who comes to listen to her will have a very similar reaction. It’s really nice to have people open up about these types of situations so that it will hopefully instill in each other a tiny bit of hope to do the same thing. If you ever have the change to hear Erin Baer speak, please take advantage of that situation and listen with an open heart and mind.
